Two sizes of the same band loom, both in solid beech and both woven the same way. The Inklette is the small one, light enough to pack for a class or a trip. The Inkle takes a longer, wider warp for belts, straps and longer trims.
Pick by the band you want. A finished band comes out about half the width of its warp, so the Inklette weaves bands up to about an inch wide. For a belt or a guitar strap wider than that, take the Inkle, which weaves up to about 1½ in.
Both have Ashford's sliding tension peg, locked with a knob, to keep the warp tight as you weave and ease it off when you advance the band.

- The Inkle comes with the same, plus a table clamp and the hex wrench for the base bolts
Assembly is gluing in the pegs and fixing on the base. Give the glue 4 hours on the Inklette and 24 on the Inkle before you warp. The booklet then takes you through your first warp and a starter band. Wax or seal the wood after assembly, so the glue grips bare wood.
The heddles (Ashford calls them leashes) are loops of strong string you tie yourself, and the booklet shows how. For a smoother shed, use Texsolv heddles instead, the table loom Texsolv for the Inklette and the Jack loom Texsolv for the Inkle.
Besides the loom, your first band takes yarn for the warp and weft, and string or fine cotton for the leashes. Strong, smooth cotton is the easy start. Our 8/4 cotton weaves a sturdy, matte band in a wide range of colors, and Ashford's 5/2 mercerized cotton weaves a finer band with a sheen.

Frequently Asked Questions
Strong, smooth yarn with little stretch. Cotton is the easy start, and mercerized cotton gives the crispest band. Most wool works too, though soft or hairy wool clings to its neighbors and makes the shed hard to open. Silk, nylon and metallic threads add variety, as long as every thread in the warp has about the same stretch.
No warping board. You wind the warp straight onto the loom's pegs, following the path in the booklet, and tie each new color on at the start peg. Beyond the yarn and the leash string, you'll want scissors and two strips of cardboard to spread the warp at the start of the band.
Yes. Stripes and simple patterns come from the order you wind the warp colors, and the booklet's first project is a striped band. Lift and drop threads with your fingers or a pick-up stick and you can weave pick-up patterns, and the booklet includes a letter chart for weaving words.
Keep the warp very tight and don't let the tension wander along the band. Each time you bring the shuttle out of the shed, tug the previous weft snug before you beat, which closes the little loop between the two outside warp threads. A weft the same color as your edge threads makes the edges look tidier still.
