Bought a whole 1 Lb of these during sale after the 4 oz earlier to try spinning my own silk yarn while learning drop spindle spinning .I came back for for more to the PF after the only lower priced DSC I could find and purchased were delivered to me soiled (which I chose to return). The 1 Lb bag from PF arrived to me glistening, almost pristine white: what a joy to one's eye! I read that spinning silk yarn directly off de-gummed cocoons is the original way to spin 100% silk yarn,- the way humans have been doing ever since. And I actually prefer spinning this way rather than from silk hankies (something I tried first). Being a more economical way is also a plus for me. Thanks to the PF I've got now a stash of quality de-gummed silk cocoons to keep spinning my silk yarn while improving my drop spindle spinning. One day I shall also try spinning my silk on my spinning wheel.
De-gumming is a way of releasing the sticky substance that holds the strands of silk together to form the cocoon, so these are still roughly cocoon shaped but fluffy by comparison with their intact counterparts. This is a natural protein fiber from silk worms so you will need to extract the chrysalis remains that will be throughout the product. These de-gummed silk cocoons are perfect for dying, spinning, or manipulating into fun silk crafts of unlimited possibility! With a little stretching you can fluff up the de-gummed silk cocoons and freely spin into yarn! Leave some bunched up and get creative with art yarns. Manipulate into shapes for hand painting or crafting.
