Fiber Content: Merino Wool (Superfine)

The fiber Spain once guarded with executions.

For four hundred years, merino sheep were Spanish state secrets. Exporting a single one was a capital offense. The wool came down from the high meseta in summer caravans of half a million animals, traded through Flanders and Florence, ended up on the shoulders of cardinals and kings. The flocks eventually escaped, by royal gift and by smuggling, into Saxony, France, and Britain in the late 1700s. The Australians quietly built an empire on what they grew there.

This is what they were all after.

Eighteen-and-a-half microns.

That is the diameter of each individual fiber, measured in millionths of a meter. Human hair runs roughly seventy. Cashmere begins around sixteen. Anything below twenty-two slips past what spinners politely call the prickle threshold, which is the technical reason most wool itches.

This one does not itch. It glides.

It arrives as a long combed ribbon of undyed white, lofty enough to hold its own weight, soft enough to be mistaken for something far more expensive. The crimp is regular and disciplined, which is what gives the finished yarn its memory and its bounce. The luster is bright, nearly pearlescent in raking light. There is a quiet handle to it, the natural lanolin not yet washed entirely away.

The specs, read as character.

  • Micron count: 18.5. Superfine. The grade once reserved for Savile Row worsteds and the layettes of the very small and very loved.
  • Fiber: 100% Merino wool top. Combed and aligned, ready for worsted or semi-worsted spinning.
  • State: Undyed. Takes acid dyes brilliantly. Kettle dyes obediently. Natural dyes with a gracious, honest depth.
  • Crimp and character: Defined, stylish, true to breed type. A spinner's wool.

Hands and wheels.

Spin it short forward from the fold for woolen loft. Spin it worsted from the end for clarity and drape. It rewards long draws and punishes heavy hands. Plied at fingering weight, the resulting yarn is the sort that gets passed around at guild meetings without commentary, because the commentary would be obvious.

Blends agreeably with silk, cashmere, alpaca, and the cellulose family (bamboo, soybean, mint, rose). Felts beautifully when you want it to. Stays put when you do not.

For.

Next-to-skin garments. Lace shawls. Baby things. The cardigan you intend to wear for twenty years. The first heirloom you give to someone who will not realize, until much later, that it is one.

There are fibers you buy because they are practical. There are fibers you buy because something in you already knows the difference.

This is the second kind.
