About Malabrigo

A family-owned yarn company located in Peru and Uruguay, Malabrigo employs mainly women of all ages and always tries to give job opportunities to people that have fewer opportunities than the average.

Most of Malabigo's yarns are hand-dyed onto Uruguayan merino wool from free-range sheep that are still herded by old-style shepherds. The alpaca, silk, cotton, and cashmere fibers in their yarns are sourced from high-quality and ethical sources around the world.

Where did the name "Malabrigo" come from?

"Mal Abrigo" roughly translates to "bad shelter", which is a curious name for a yarn company. This name partially comes from the small village of Mal Abrigo in Uruguay. This village was named Mal Abrigo because it is extremely windy and back in the day when people traveled everywhere on horseback and had to find shelter for the night, it was famous for being a terrible place to stop. In the minds of the founders of Malabrigo, it is an imaginary and very chilly place where the weather drives everyone inside to knit, or cozy up to the fire, and where woolly sweaters, hats, and scarves are always useful!

How is "Malabrigo" pronounced?

'maul' - 'ah-bree' - 'go'
