Thrum knitting is a time-honored tradition of knitting unspun wool inside knits to create the feel of the natural insulation of sheepskin. The ends of the fleece are like soft pillows, making your babys head cuddly and warm.
We use US worsted weight wool, hand dye it and add Blue Face Leicester fleece from our local sheep farmers at Holler Farm . The pattern instructs how to take wisps of the fleece and knit it into the ear flap hat.
Yarn - Appalachian Baby Natural ; Hand dyed Wool ; Wool Roving for Thrums
Sizes - 12 months - 16" circumference ; 24 months - 17 3/4" circumference.
Needle size needed - US 5 12" circular and set of Double point US 5, or size required to obtain correct gauge.
Gauge, Knit in the Round - 91/2 sts = 2" over thrum pattern.
