Introducing Artfelt Pencil Rovings. 50g bundles, 100% Merino Fiber that can be spun, felted, woven, or knitted as is (fingering weight) This delightful roving is available in standard roving form and pencil roving form. Pencil Roving is just a thinner version of the standard roving. This fiber is lovely to use in felting projects! Felting has been practiced for centuries and is one of the oldest methods of creating fabric known to man. In the past, it has been quite a laborious task, but now there is a new way to felt that is truly revolutionizing the way we do it. Let us introduce you to ARTFELT!
Prior to Artfelt, there were various methods of felting, the most popular being wet felting, needle felting, and fulling. All three methods create a felted material of some sort, but all three also require tremendous amount of either time or physical effort. Artfelt combines the best attributes of all three methods with a new patented paper developed to ease and speed up the felting process. This special paper allows one to felt extremely simple to incredibly complex pieces with minimal space and little physical effort. It allows one to create a felted material that can be thick or thin, precise or abstract, and the whole process can be accomplished with very little experience and in a minimal amount of time. Felting made easy! Check out these free pdf downloadable patterns below to get inspiration! Be sure to pick up some Artfelt paper with your roving purchase!
When I purchased it, I was a bit worried about how soft the fiber would be seeing as it seems to be marketed mainly towards felting, but it is super soft and nice to spin with as well. I am using this fiber with a drop spindle, and it drafts out beautifully. There are long sections of color that cycle through in the fiber, some more obvious than others, and it is really enjoyable so see the colors shift as it gets spun. The long continuos roving is nice as well, less joining while spinning always makes for a more relaxing spin.
Have not used yet, but are beautiful!!
For a beginner spinner the artiest pencil rowing is a blast to use. You can spin it as is for a chunky yarn or practice drafting to get the size of yarn you want the colors are vibrant. I always suggest this for my students who are just starting out.
