Worked in mosaic slipped stitch pattern and stranded knitting, this is a perfect knitting-technique sampler you can felt most tension issues out of.  The size of the bag will depend on how much you felt it.  Our bag measures 42 inches circumference, 18.5 inches long and 28 inches long including the handle.

It has to be said, this poncho (or swoncho) is a favorite of ours, and we're not the only ones, since it was featured in Vogue Knitting! Elegant wide cables, original cuffs and the softness and drape of our Magic+ yarn make this poncho a perfect example of French knitting chic by Bergère de France. The pattern is knitted in 2 parts, in stockinette, reverse stockinette, ribbing and cables. You will also need size US 8 and 9 needles, plus a cable needle.

Kit includes Bergere de France Poncho Pattern 286.57 and requested number of Bergere de France Magic+ yarn.  For size S/M you will need 17 balls for sizes L, XL and XXL you will need 20 balls.

This fiber takes dye wonderfully and is naturally a little more off white than usual.  I dyed some of it up quickly with Country Classics in our dye room and spun some up.  Take a look at the photo on this page for reference.  

In the last 18 months, we have become interested in many of the European sheep breeds that have had little exposure in the fiber arts community. The Portuguese Merino Sheep has its roots going back 400 plus years to the original Spanish Merino Stock. Even though the breed is called Portuguese Merino, it's merino with a little "m". The micron count on the wool is just under 25 microns so it's best for felting or outerwear and great for beginning spinners. The wool is relatively short at 2" to 2.5" staple. What makes the wool so interesting is its elasticity. The top has incredible body which produces a yarn with the same characteristic.

The wool is produced into top at a plant in Portugal. We've been told that their equipment might not be the newest-the term "vintage" comes to mind. So the top is not the prettiest and there may be a small amount of vegetable matter in it, but it just adds to the unique character of the wool.

The genetics on this breed is very interesting. As mentioned earlier, the breed has some of the same genetic markers as the original Spanish Merino but there is no doubt that the Portuguese existed on a parallel track with the Spanish as long as 500 years ago. In the early 20th century, the French Mutton Merino was crossed with the Portuguese to improve early maturity of lambs. The French Mutton Merino was established in Rambouillet, France to improve the meat characteristics of the many merino breeds. The foundation stock of the French Mutton Merino and the Rambouillet sheep is, of course, the Spanish Merino.
