Take some fiber...twist it a bit on a spinning wheel or drop spindle and you've got yarn!
Sound easy? With some brief instruction you'll be spinning your own yarn in no time! Though spinning may seem like a simple process the creative possibilities are endless! Spinning your own yarn allows you to create a garment that is truly unique. It is no wonder that so many knitters and weavers are learning to spin.
One of the best ways to learn to spin is with a drop spindle. I'll warn you it's not the easiest way to start but drop spindles are relatively inexpensive compared to purchasing a spinning wheel. Once you master the drop spindle the transition to a wheel is easy, also drop spindle spinning helps you learn and understand the drafting process, which is the most important part of spinning. Drafting determines the thickness and eveness of the yarn. I personally prefer top whorl spindles and you can usually find one that will get you started for around forty dollars. Be careful of cheaper spindles as you want one that is heavy enough and well designed. A good spindle will make the learning process much easier.
The next thing you need to do is select a fiber to start with. You want to choose a fiber that has some grab to it. That way it won't slide apart as you are drafting. I suggest corriedale cross or colombia wool. Also there are some videos that can help you get off to a great start. Drop spindle spinning by Melda Montgomery is an excellent resource.
The most important piece of advice I can offer is to be patient and don't expect perfection. We all start off making novelty yarn. Once you are a seasoned spinstress you will have to work to get lumps in your yarn!
Have Fun & Happy Spinning!
