What is Superwash yarn and why do we need to know?
Superwash is a patented process performed in a mill that typically coats the fiber with resin. This resin coating allows the fiber to be washed and dried in a dryer without felting. The superwash processed yarn should not be washed or dried at temperatures higher than 130 degrees Fahrenheit. It is particularly nice for children's clothing and socks. After spinning your yarn, preshrink your yarn by tying the skeins in a number of places, then washing and drying in the dryer. The yarn will puff up a lot! Try a sample to see how you like it and how it tolerates your particular washing conditions. You may want to spin a very fine firm yarn in order to get the end product you desire.
Dyeing superwash roving: If you are dyeing the fiber, do not heat it above 130 degrees. Dyeing with KoolAid and strong coffee dyeing can sometimes break down the resin coating and cause felting. ALWAYS SAMPLE!
