We carry the entire line of Ashford Rigid Heddle Looms and Ashford Rigid Heddle Reeds in stock. Why does Ashford make two kinds of Rigid Heddle Looms? Everyone knows knitters take their projects everywhere because knitting is a portable craft naturally. Weaving looms in general are not very portable and in the past even space prohibitive with the traditional large floor looms and table looms. Ashford said why can't weaving be portable? Leave it to Richard Ashford to break the rules once again and do just that. The Ashford Knitter's Loom was born. The Ashford Knitter's Loom revolutionized the weaving world making hand weaving not only portable but allowing for thicker yarns to be used in the warp with the custom large eye reed the Knitter's Loom included ready for DK weight knitting yarn. With the new found portability and versatility of different yarn weights the Knitter's Loom quickly became popular with knitter's everywhere hence the name.
Here is a rundown of the two types of rigid heddle looms from Ashford. The first and most common is the Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom which is a very straight forward beginner weaving loom perfect for first time weavers. It features unfinished New Zealand Cherry Wood and comes complete for everything you need to start weaving except yarn and includes stick shuttles and weaving threading hook. The price on the standard Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom is very reasonable and is it's strongest feature. The Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom is a well built basic loom at a great price. The Ashford Rigid Heddle is a great choice for beginners who are not sure if they are going to like weaving and or don't need portability.
So you say you want a more portable weaving experience, welcome to the stage...The Ashford Knitter's Loom! The Knitter's Loom is a heavy duty folding rigid heddle loom built to last. Yes this loom is for weaving not for knitting, but it is designed for knitters who are ready to explore weaving with a high quality portable weaving tool. It comes standard with stick shuttles, threading hook and a warping peg setup for a fast simple way to warp your rigid heddle loom. The Knitter's Loom is constructed of finished New Zealand Cherry which has a darker color that it's other Ashford Rigid Heddle counterpart. This loom in short is built much more stout and is made for travel and folds up with your work on it for storage. We have customers all around the world using this loom while traveling via airplane, RV, camping, retreats and it is the ultimate rigid heddle workshop loom.
What other accessories are fun to use these looms? Both of these rigid heddle looms come complete with stick shuttles which are basically thin long flat pieces of wood that you wrap your yarn around. The stick shuttles can be swapped out for Ashford Boat Shuttles or Schacht Slim Boat Shuttles. Generally you can't use boat shuttles on rigid heddle looms as the shed or opening between the threads is not tall enough but using a slim type boat shuttle this is possible and loads of fun. Sailing the boat shuttle across your rigid heddle loom adds a whole new level of productivity and run to your rigid heddle weaving experience. You can also upgrade either the Ashford Knitters Loom or the Ashford Rigid Heddle to use 2 reeds at once making it a 2 shaft loom! Using the 2 reeds allows for more advanced possibilities for design and functionality. The Ashford 2nd heddle kit will upgrade with of these looms respectively.
